Unemployment: Welfare for the 21st Century?

In a bold move, Senate Republicans, with the help of a few of their Democrat counterparts, blocked a bill that would have extended unemployment to those out of work in this economic crisis. The bill would have accorded the unemployed another 73 weeks of unemployment benefits after they had received 26 weeks from the state in which they reside, in total 99 weeks, or nearly two years.
