The Torturous Logic of Democrats

This is a great contribution by atomheartmother: Despite the efforts of Democrats to downplay the effectiveness of coercive techniques and to shamelessly criminalize a policy issue for political reasons, the evidence that that these techniques did result in information that saved many American lives is compelling. George Tenet said that the "enhanced interrogation" program yielded more information than everything gotten from "the FBI, the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency put together." Michael Hayden, CIA director (after waterboarding had been discontinued) wrote that "as late as 2006 . . . fully half of the government's knowledge about the structure and activities of al-Qaeda came from those interrogations." Indeed, even Obama's own director of national intelligence, Dennis Blair, admits that these interrogations yielded "high value information." The problem for the left is twofold. As the Obama administration pandered to its far left base by releasing the "torture memos," they opened a Pandora's Box. While sticking to the "torture is wrong and it doesn't work anyway" theme, they've ignored the evidence to the contrary- at least on the second point- because the information about what was gleaned from these techniques was redacted from the memos that were released. Cheney knew this, and had the stones and public recognition to make a difference when he pointed out that if we're going to reveal what techniques were used, we need to also release information about what was learned from these techniques. The second problem is that whether or not these practices were legal or justified, it's becoming clear that Congress was informed and consulted every step of the way, so the high-ranking Democrats who shamelessly attempted to assume the moral high ground are backpedaling furiously, and have been exposed as complicit hypocrites- case in point, the plight of the Speaker of the House, who's self-righteous condemnations have been revealed to be not just cowardly but hollow as well. Obama could release the "rest of the story" with a wave of his hand, but he's not inclined to do. The administration is politically astute enough to realize that if even more compelling evidence emerges that enhanced interrogation methods resulted in saving thousands of lives, the vast majority of Americans are going to overwhelmingly say that it made sense to use them, and that's why he's blocking release of this information. Unfortunately for the president, he wasn’t politically astute enough to understand that by releasing only the techniques and not the results, the firestorm of debate on the matter is not going to just go away like they'd hoped. The use of coercive techniques and what was gained from their use is a national security matter on which thousands, perhaps millions of American lives may depend. The left has politicized this issue, and gained political power by doing so. We as a nation are entitled to full disclosure and a true national debate on this issue. It is now clear that the Obama Administration does not want this, but because of their own actions, they're not going to be able to avoid it. They wanted it, they got it, and this is an issue that's not going away. In the end, it's going to be a BIG winner for the Republicans, and provide a much-deserved vindication for former President Bush and his policies.

“..the ends justify the

“..the ends justify the means.” These words are from Niccolo Machiavelli in the early sixteenth century. Even today they are tinged with cynicisms that most instinctively recoil from. As leader of a nation of 300 million people the POTUS makes life and death decisions everyday. I can not imagine the duress that Mr. Bush was under when he made this decision. Because he is a man of faith I am sure that it was not easy for him. I cannot say what the line is between tough interaction techniques and torture. As with pornography, I think I’ll know it when I see it. Water boarding looks like torture to me. I don’t believe I could have authorized its use; even knowing that it would cost innocent lives. War is an ugly business and drives people to do things they would not do under any other circumstances. Morality is not a mathematical ledger sheet. There are no easy answers, each choice has great costs. This matter will be judged by our grandchildren in the same way that Hiroshima and Nagasaki are judged today. What is crystal clear is that Mr. Obama does not agree with me. He wishes to set up some perfect third choice. He claims that it was illegal for the last administration to do these things but not so illegal that they should be prosecuted. He claims that theses techniques are evil but not so evil that he will never use them. Clearly this illustrates that he believes in a situational morality. He believes in complex set of ideas that allows him any action given the appropriate situation. He can not lie unless it is about bad politicians. He can not steal except from those whom haven’t given theire fair share. These people can not be tortured because of these circumstances those people can. I find this idea horrifying. Wasn’t it thinking like this what lead Rwandans to kill women and children with machetes because of what tribe they belong to? Mr. Obama is using this incident to amass political power. He is trying to use the emotional response that many Americans have to the horror of war to further his agenda. I am comfortable saying that he has shown no principles concerning his actions as long as he achieves his goals. His only measurement is has the ends justified the means. Mr. Obama maybe a cunning politician but he should remember another axiom, those that live by the sword die by the sword.

Five Finger Shoes

The marketed primary use for the Five Finger Shoes Trek is for off-road trail running. The tougher sole will suit many other uses where a thicker more protective sole is preferred. The fit is extremely snug. The forefoot is well protected against sharp objects while still providing decent ground-feel. It is very likely that many that use FiveFingers products for sports of any kind may find the extra protection preferable to the regular thin-soled Five Fingers Shoes. Due to the new sole design and the more water resistant leather upper, the Treks are better suited for wet weather conditions than any other FiveFingers model. Although many of the FiveFingers products are used as “water shoes” the Treks design may not be as well-suited for in-water use.
