Basic Training Gets Kinder, Gentler

Basic training is about to get kinder and gentler for new Army recruits.
Gone will be the days of screaming drill instructors, mock bayonet fights, and boring PowerPoint presentations. Pushups and long marches also will decrease.

That doesn’t mean training will be a walk in the park, though.

Recruits still will get a good dose of discipline, says Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling, who is spearheading the new training program.

Many of today’s potential soldiers lack the mental toughness the Army needs in “very tense and difficult situations,” so the program is intended to instill the ability to cope, Hertling says.

The softening of the so-called millennial generation in mind, body, and spirit forced the training reevaluation, according to the Army. Recruits now have greater technological savvy and a larger sense of purpose than their predecessors but lack what the 21st-century Army needs to succeed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The new basic training regimen will emphasize teaching recruits raised in an environment of video games to develop “a spirit of aggression” and preparing them for the stress of combat. It also will focus on skills such as marksmanship and the ability to adapt to changing situations they will face in battle.

The Army brass took inspiration from Tony Wagner’s book: “The Global Achievement Gap,” which explains how the contemporary educational system has failed to prepare youths for corporate America’s needs and seeks a smarter way to train recruits.

The Army’s old ways of doing things were not passing muster, so the service decided things had to adapt to fit recruits’ needs, Hertling says.

The revised training also presses the use of technology in all aspects of battle.
The disappearance of physical education classes in many schools translated into an obesity epidemic that has taken a heavy toll on the Army, Hertling says. Statistics indicate that only 25 percent of Americans between 18 and 24 meet the Army’s physical requirements.

Of those who make the cut, 54 percent of male recruits and 43 percent of female recruits are overweight, which officials say costs the army millions of dollars because it discharges 1,200 enlistees annually for weight issues.

“The military must then recruit and train their replacements at a cost of $50,000 for each man or woman, thus spending more than $60 million a year,” says the report “Too Fat to Fight,” published by a group of retired generals and admirals, including several former chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who have labeled their effort Mission: Readiness Military Leadership for Kids.

“That figure pales in comparison, however, to the cost of treating obesity-related problems of military personnel and their families under the military’s healthcare system, TRICARE, or the cost of treating obesity-related problems under the veterans’ healthcare system,” the report says.
