Unemployment: Welfare for the 21st Century?

In a bold move, Senate Republicans, with the help of a few of their Democrat counterparts, blocked a bill that would have extended unemployment to those out of work in this economic crisis. The bill would have accorded the unemployed another 73 weeks of unemployment benefits after they had received 26 weeks from the state in which they reside, in total 99 weeks, or nearly two years.

How heartless, has been the common whine from the left, and while my heart breaks for my fellow Americans, I also realize that if we want to cease the downward spiral this country has fallen into, the welfare must stop.

This isn't welfare. I have heard this time and again. It is in fact a form of welfare if taken on an extended basis. This is the nanny state, folks. This is exactly what your liberal government wants for you. Dependence on a system of unemployment, ignorance, and blindness.

The argument the Republicans had with this bill was that $35 billion of it was unfunded. They demanded that it be fully funded, and to that end, they suggested the money be appropriated from unspent stimulus funds. It was a legitimate request, which the Democrats promptly screamed "UNFAIR!"

Why is it unreasonable to ask a free-spending government of a bankrupt country to pay for their squandering of more non-existent money?

I know the answer to this. To take money from the stimulus debacle and fund unemployment creates two distinct complications for the Democrats.

Much of that money has been openly earmarked for unions, lobbyists, and special interest groups such as ACORN and their ilk. These are the groups that the puppet Obama sold his soul to to attain the Presidency. Failure to funnel money their way is tantamount to political suicide. Therefore, those funds cannot be annexed from the pay it back fund, which is what the stimulus amounts to.

Second, if those funds were used to help those who find themselves out of work, that's $35 billion less that the liberals can claim helped create X amount of jobs. A win for us, a loss for them. Nothing like one job costing us taxpayers $400,000. They wouldn't dare touch this money.

Nevada leads the nation in unemployment. At more than 14%, we top Michigan, home of that grand city of Detroit which is notorious for high crime, high unemployment, high taxes, and low graduation numbers. Detroit has long been a shameful blight on this country, while Nevada, home of independence and a live and let live philosophy, has fallen to the nanny state, with their welfare dependence. Let's see what people on unemployment here have to say about the death of this newest handout:

Gordon Jones, 53, is terribly dismayed over the prospect of losing his unemployment benefits. Out of work as a used car salesman for more than a YEAR AND A HALF, he claims he cannot find work and is nearly starving on the pittance the government doles out to him.

"This is devastating," said Jones, 53 and single. "I have bills I can't pay, and trying to get a job right now it seems for each job there are three thousand applications. You can't even get a job at 7-Eleven or McDonald's here."

Jones claimed he has contacted Senator John Ensign's office. An aide told Jones that Ensign "wasn't voting against the bill, he was voting against the way they were funding it," and that Ensign supported garnering the needed money by using bailout funds to pay for jobless benefits.

"I don't care how it is funded," Jones said. "We need the money, period. I am sure I am not the only one in this situation."

Typical liberal. I don't care where it comes from, just give me mine. Gordon collects $375 a week, is single, lives in an apartment, and is terrified he will have to actually take a menial job, which he claims he cannot land. Bull. Sorry, Gordo, time to get off your hind end and go looking. Anyone out of work for a year and a half who can't find employment would MOVE.

I'm not castigating anyone for being on unemployment for a short term in this economic environment. I know how it must rankle the many good men and women out there who are genuinely in need. I can even see being on unemployment for a year. But beyond that, it's time to move. Seek out employment elsewhere. I have had to do it. It isn't the greatest situation for anyone to find themselves in, but when the situation warrants, sometimes you have to start over.

I can't stress enough to people that until the safety nets are dismantled, until we are facing more than the dread of losing our satellite TV when unemployment benefits stop rolling in, we will never rise from our knees and take back our rightful title as the strongest, richest nation in the world. I'm sorry for everyone who is suffering, but we continue to affix a bandaid on a gaping wound over and over. Now that wound is infected, and we're all sick because of it.
