It is annoying being Conservative (sometimes)
Conservatism is tough.
Life is tough.
Being a Liberal...easy.
To be a Liberal, you simply have to feel ___________ and you have made your point.
To be a Conservative, you have to know the Constitution inside and out. You have to know which amendment was written when, by whom, and who was President when certain parts of the Constitution were amended.
A Liberals knowledge of law consists of a woman’s right to end life, free speech, and the FDR-born rallying cry, “general welfare”.
Conservatives have to watch hours of news or listen to hours of talk radio (daily) to stay informed.
Liberals do not because feelings always suffice.
Being Conservative means you are mean.
Being Liberal means you are nice and compassionate.
Some claim Conservative’s believe in doing nothing...and they are correct for the most part. Conservatives could live with the House and Senate meeting every quarter and going home.
Liberals however cannot. They make laws to prevent laws from being laws...and then do little to enforce them.
LIberals are experts at using all of the powers and benefits of capitalism to amass power and wealth and in the very next breath decry how cruel and unfair it is.
The real and stark difference between the two ideologies lies in their beliefs about themselves and others:
Liberals see people as victims (or claim to be victims themselves) that need to be saved, protected, and controlled (for their own good).
Conservatives view people as creators of their own destiny and believe a persons lot in life is what they choose to make of it and is not determined by the first “hand” of cards they are dealt.
I have always believed that if people knew the truth and could actually see what was going on with their government, they would be sickened and automatically become Conservative...provided they had enough information.
I now realize, I am wrong.
It seems people are born with these “predispositions” to victimhood or responsibility.
Remember when you were in high school? How many high achieving peers never whined or blamed others...and later became a Liberal?
How many “scraping by-type” peers did you grow up with that ached and complained about everything and later became Conservative?
Now...I am in no way saying kids that “rode the pine” turn into adults with their hands out. I know plenty of “Rudy’s” (from the movie of the same name) that maximized their ability but didn’t achieve “fortune and fame” and are fine with that. I also know people that have low paying jobs, that aren’t fulfilled in life, and will actually tell you that IT IS THEIR FAULT.
What I am saying is...conversion is futile (for the most part)!
Conservatives won’t budge on freedom, liberty, and individual responsability and Liberals won’t budge on socialism where those that are responsible are forced to carry the burden for those that choose not to be. (And no, the characterization of ‘socialist’ is not used for effect, it is apt when you take their ideology to its logical conclusion)
The elusive slice of the pie (politically) lies in the majority. The smart ones. The people that weigh all of their options before making a decision. The open minded ones. The moderates.
The most troubling moderates to TRUE conservatives are the Christians. They hate abortion, so they can’t vote for a Democrat, but they don’t want to be called mean, so they support Democrat-lite candidates that call themselves Republicans.
By voting for middle of the road Republicans in sheep’s clothing, they are saying (and don’t know it) “I trust in government more than in God”.
How?
Because yes, we should take care of the poor...individually, but government has always proven to corrupt character, or is it power that corrupts character?
“But if the government doesn’t take care of poor people, than they will just end up sleeping in the streets with no food, shelter...”
Are you saying that Christian and tree worshipers will simply let them starve?
Everything that the government does at the point of the barrel, individuals can do freely without it.
“You don’t get it Mr. or Mrs. Conservative, people individually WILL NOT give enough to support the number of people that truly need help, it isn’t 1840 any more, there are a lot more mouths to feed these days”.
So we are back to...”you trust government more than God”.
Look, if you are concerned about poor people do something. Give. Help. Work at a soup kitchen. Bring your clothes you don’t wear any more down to a homeless shelter. You think ‘something must be done’...but you do nothing and drag the rest of us with you because you feel guilty.
Conservatives don’t hate poor people. They believe in the power of the individual.
Conservatives wonder how people like Jay Z, Russell Simmons, and other famous Democrats get off not helping poor people by giving them jobs. Instead of opening a textile factory in downtown Harlem or Detroit, brands like Fubu, Roccawear and Phat farm have chosen to go overseas shutting out the people they say need the most help (and charge them and arm and a leg in the process).
Capitalism has helped more people overcome poverty than any other form of government.
In its purest form, it always will.
