The Welfare Manifesto... or our Constitution?
Are we legally bound to be our brothers keeper?
Conservatives have charged for years that the Constitution gives individuals the right to life, liberty, and the PURSUIT of happiness, but does not guarantee it.
Liberals have fired back that article 1, section 8 of the Constitution does in fact have “brother’s keeper” provision:
“The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States”.
The next seventeen lines outline what the government can do to you as an individual for the common good of the country. It specifies what exactly the "general welfare" of the United States actually is:

The godfather of modern day liberalism, Franklin Roosevelt, took the first line of article 1, section 8 and made it into the religion we all recognize today: Socialism.
Socialism by definition, calls everyone to be their brothers keeper and looks at the world as a quasi-utopia where all people share in the harvest but not all are required to share in the work with regard to “tilling, planting, and watering”. Socialism only cares about the end, the harvest.

Is social security?
How about food stamps or food debit cards?
Liberals will argue, “obviously they are Constitutional or someone would have challenged their validity years ago...idiot”.
At this point, the debate usually stifles itself with conservatives claiming that the Constitution explicitly says X and liberals says it implicitly says Y.

With respect to the words general welfare, I have always regarded them as qualified by the detail of powers connected with them. To take them in a literal and unlimited sense would be a metamorphosis of the Constitution into a character which there is a host of proofs was not contemplated by its creators. - James Madison
Since most scholars consider Madison and Jefferson to be the principle authors of the Constitution, I am confused how their words hold no weight today in the debate over entitlements like socialized medicine (public option), free housing, free food, etc.
My friend and high school classmate, David Smith, pointed out “The answer is found in two main places: The Constitution itself, and the Federalist Paper 45.
Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution defines (enumerates) the powers of Congress. Nowhere in this Article, or section, or elsewhere in the Constitution, is the federal government authorized to provide health insurance, or to mandate that citizens purchase it. Therefore, if one believes that the government functions according to the rules "we the people" agreed to in our contract with it then surely authority not authorized by the Constitution is, by definition, unconstitutional.
In Federalist 45, Madison explains that the purpose of the federal government is to focus on security and foreign affairs, and for the states to focus on "the objects which, in the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives, liberties, and properties of the people, and the internal order, improvement, and prosperity of the State." Madison further states that the "powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the State governments are numerous and indefinite. The former will be exercised principally on external objects, as war, peace, negotiation, and foreign commerce; with which last the power of taxation will, for the most part, be connected."
Our founders never intended for A person to be tethered to another simply because one has a need and the other has the means to provide it.
If health care is truly a right that everyone should enjoy, but not all have to share in the cost, then we should also have to provide universal food care, universal housing, and universal retirement.
The reality is, individual states have the right to provide all of those entitlements plus more so long as the people deem those as appropriate and vote accordingly. This power however is NOT GRANTED TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.
We have seen states like Michigan, California, New York, and Massachusetts already take advantage of their “power”. Businesses and citizens have been vacating these states for years due to their overburdensome taxation and assault on the rights of the individual.
Liberals will argue that, “just because something isn’t Constitutional, doesn’t erase the need for their enactment”.
Luckily the Constitution provides for individuals to tackle these problems free from the government’s involvement.
Liberals hate to hear this but individuals have the right to give or not give, be exceedingly greedy or very benevolent. To force someone to give violates their rights to enjoy the “fruits” of their labor. In my opinion, what passes as being “your brothers keeper” has become legalized thievery.
The issue that bothers me most is the utter hypocrisy of liberals that claim we should all give but do little in their own personal lives with regard to giving to support their credo.
It greatly offends me that they want all of the benefits of capitalism but decry its greed if someone doesn’t make the same choices as they do with their harvest.
When the President and Vice President today give less than many middle class church goers, their message of helping via dollars falls on deaf ears. To them, they equate a dollar as a dollar whether you make a million dollars per year or fifty thousand?
If liberals really believed in sharing of wealth, I wonder why they don’t pool all of their paychecks together at their place of employment and simply divide by the number of people...or are they greedy?
I wonder why they drive expensive cars when a cars only purpose should be to get one from point A to point B?
I wonder why if health care is such a big issue and they “have a friend without health care”, they hoard their money and don’t pay their neighbors premiums until the government forces me or their neighbor to share in the cost?
Simply pointing out problems and forcing others to share in your “concern” via their tax dollars is offensive...and as pointed out earlier, Unconstitutional.
The dirty little secret is, entitlements equal votes.
They don’t change a persons tax bracket or education level and the ironic thing is the very people liberals want to most help care least about them and if they happened to be in their neighborhood at the wrong time, they might figure it out.
